Hawaii has signed an agreement to partner with Nissan North America to promote the use of electric vehicles and infrastructure in Hawaii.
The partnership between Hawaii and Nissan was announced at a press conference at the Asia Pacific Clean Energy Summit and Expo, which started Tuesday and goes through Thursday at the Hawaii Convention Center.
Under the agreement, Nissan and the state of Hawaii will develop plans for promoting the charging infrastructure for the electric vehicles, and for deploying and maintaining the charging network, according to a statement from Nissan. The Japanese automaker also has committed to supplying the Nissan Leaf electric vehicles to the state; Hawaii is one of seven states chosen for the early 2011 launch of the Leaf, according to Brian Carolin, Nissan North America senior vice president of sales and marketing. Hawaii has the highest per capita interest in the Leaf, with 300 Hawaii residents already reserving the vehicles, according to Carolin.
Details about the number of charging stations being planned by the state of Hawaii, how much it will cost to build them and proposed locations was not immediately available. It was also unknown how many Leaf models Nissan would be sending to Hawaii dealerships starting next January.
Gov. Linda Lingle said Hawaii’s commitment to clean energy and the Hawaii Clean Energy Initiative was the reason for the partnership with Nissan.
The Nissan Leaf is a five-passenger electric vehicle that features zero emissions and can travel an average of 100 miles on a single electric charge, according to a Nissan press release.
