USA: House panel wants half of U.S. cars electric by 2030

Electric cars are poised to start rolling out later this year, but some in Congress are thinking much more aggressively.

As Drive On’s James R. Healey tries out Mitsubishi’s iMiEV electric car today in Test Drive, the drive to put more cars like it on the streets in a hurry comes from Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, which this week passed a bill that would put $3.9 billion in the hands of cities to build electric car infrastructure. The goal, Automotive News reports, is to electrify half of U.S. vehicles by 2030.

That could cut the U.S. dependence on foreign oil by a third, the News says.
