Korea/USA: Sources: Electric car manufacturer to announce Spartanburg plant

An electric car manufacturer is expected to announce a new assembly and sales plant in Spartanburg on Thursday morning at the Statehouse in Columbia, multiple sources tell the Herald-Journal.

CT&T United could bring between 300 and 400 jobs to the Upstate for the plant.

CT&T United Senior Marketing Director Curt Westlake would not comment on Thursday’s announcement beyond saying it would be about a new facility in South Carolina. However, when the Herald-Journal pointed out that the CT&T news conference was the exact time and place of another news conference featuring Gov. Mark Sanford, the S.C. Department of Commerce and Spartanburg County officials, Westlake said, “I think you’ve already put two and two together.”

Officials here have been courting CT&T United for months.

In November, sources close to negotiations said Spartanburg was one of three sites under consideration, the others being in the Lowcountry of this state and in Georgia.

At the time, Westlake said his company was looking at the sites in the Southeast not only for an assembly and sales plant, but for a North American headquarters and research and development center. The latter facility — which could bring up to 2,500 jobs over five years — is not expected to be a part of Thursday’s announcement. It was unclear today whether that’s totally off the table.
