Japan/USA: Details on Nissan Leaf battery pack, including how recharging speed affects battery life

Nissan broke ground on a new battery plant in Smyrna, Tennessee yesterday (figuratively, anyway, the actual bulldozing doesn’t start for a few weeks). For now, we will call this the U.S. Leaf battery plant, but it’s really part of Nissan’s strategy to electrify more and more of its vehicles. As we mentioned yesterday, once it is up and running at the end of 2012, the plant will have the capacity to make 200,000 battery packs a year. The nearby vehicle assembly facility where the U.S.-built Leafs will come to life will have a maximum capacity to make 150,000 Leafs a year alongside other Nissan vehicles like the Altima and Pathfinder. The extra capacity, if used, could be sold to other automakers or go into non-Leaf Nissan products.

USA: Electric Car Bills on the Hill: 10 Things You Should Know

The Electric Drive Vehicle Deployment Act of 2010, introduced in Congress this week, has a simple goal to electrify half of all cars and trucks on U.S. roads by 2030, and a basic strategy: focus the might of the federal government on a small number of pilot communities around the country, subsidizing the buildout of charging infrastructure and purchase of electric vehicles.

Germany: Electric vehicle market set for massive growth

According to figures released by Germany’s Federal Ministry of the Environment, global sales of electric powertrains will be worth €470- billion by 2020. Assuming national market shares remain unchanged, this means a potential market value of €85-billion for Germany’s car manufacturers. Meanwhile, sales of cars powered by conventional internal combustion engines will decline. This is why Germany is setting itself ambitious goals. If the federal government has its way, there will be one-million electric cars on Germany’s roads by 2020. It is a complex challenge, given that it means turning two whole industries and their production chains – car making and energy supply – on their heads. This can only work if manufacturers, component suppliers and scientific organisations enter into a close dialogue and agree to move forward together. Hanover Fair provided the best platform for this kind of dialogue in the form of the MobiliTec trade fair.

Japan: Nissan Plans on Selling an Inexpensive, Under 30-Minute Fast Charging Station in the U.S.

Nissan shocked everybody a bit earlier this week when they announced they had developed a DC fast charging station that had the capability of getting a Nissan LEAF’s 24 kWh battery pack from zero to 80% full in under a half hour. It wasn’t so much the fast charging capability — also known as Level 3 charging — that shocked. We’ve all known Level 3 charging was coming. No, it was the price of their charging station.
