Mar. 16, 2010 (The Yomiuri Shimbun) — Automakers, electric power companies and other firms set up an association Monday to promote the use of quick-chargers for electric vehicles and standardize charging methods to promote the uptake of such vehicles.
By taking the lead globally on standardized charging methods, CHAdeMO Association aims to set the pace in the electric vehicle market, which is expected to grow fast in the years ahead.
The association comprises 158 businesses and government bodies, including Toyota Motor Corp. (NYSE:TM) , Nissan Motor Co. (OOTC:NSANY) , Mitsubishi Motors Corp. (OOTC:MMTOY) , Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd., Tokyo Electric Power Co. (OOTC:TKECY) , as well as such foreign companies as PSA Peugeot Citroen S.A.
The charging system dubbed CHAdeMo Method developed by TEPCO and other firms enables an electric vehicle to run about 60 kilometers on a 10-minute charge.
The method incorporates unique technology that uses information technology to facilitate the transfer of energy between vehicle and charger, enabling anyone to charge safely and easily.
CHAdeMO is an acronym, with CHA taken from the word “charge” and MO from “move” linked by the word “de.” Phonetically, it signifies a handy charging method as in “While having a cup of tea or something (In Japanese: ‘Ochademo nonde iru aidani’), charging is completed.”
As the charger is able to read battery life data transmitted by an electric vehicle, it tops up each battery to the correct level, avoiding battery overheating due to excessive charging.
According to TEPCO, Japan is the only country that has developed a practical and safe charging method.
Fuji-Keizai, a private research firm, predicts the global electric vehicle market will grow from 81 billion yen in 2010 to 770 billion yen in 2015.
