Geneva – The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe announced Wednesday a common standards for electric and hybrid cars, which Brussels has hailed as a “landmark decision.”Electric vehicles operate at very high voltages – generally in the range of 500 volts – prompting a risk of electric shocks. The new regulation is designed to help prevent this risk.
“One of the key requirements is that vehicles must provide users with an effective protection against electric shocks,” the ECE said in its announcement.
“This landmark decision will facilitate the early introduction of safe and clean electric cars onto our roads,” the European Commission in Brussels said in a statement.
“Hybrid and electric cars are increasingly available on the market and are very promising in terms of making road transport clean and energy efficient,” the statement noted, adding that the number of such vehicles would continue to rise.
