Electric cars that can reach 60kph will hit the road in March, speeding up mass-production of their vehicles, officials said Tuesday (December 29).
The land, transport and maritime affairs ministry said the government passed a revision bill to the Vehicle Management Law, to allow low-speed electric cars in some designated areas to take effect on March 30.
The revised law also stresses new safety standards. The cars are to be subjected to operational tests.
The government has already announced plans to inject about 400 billion won (US$341 million) by 2014 to develop high-performance batteries and other related systems needed.
It also plans to support the full-scale production of electric cars in late 2011.
Starting in the second half of 2011, the government will promote the sale of electric cars by granting subsidies for state agencies. It will also consider offering tax incentives, officials said.
Currently, some local carmakers like CT&T manufacture low-speed, electric vehicles.
