Health: Nothing new in carbon monoxide poisoning

Basalt police officer Mike Taylor said Friday he has been unable to check in on the health of the couple, who were found unconscious in their bed Thursday morning, rushed to Aspen Valley Hospital and airlifted to a Denver hospital. The last he had heard they would be OK.

The identities of the couple have not been released but when they were found the situation appeared life-threatening. A car that was running in the garage was responsible for the poisoning, he said, but it is unclear whether the car was turned on Thursday morning or Wednesday night. The vehicle, which was in a closed garage, had its ignition on but it was out of gas and the car’s battery was nearly dead when police arrived.

Another couple staying at the home, on 207 Wildsprings Lane, were the first to report the incident. It was unclear what the relationship is between the two couples, according to police. A carbon monoxide detector in the house had been removed and was found near the bed where the poisoned couple were sleeping, according to Taylor.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident
