Connecticut: start your engines.
An executive order is paving the way for many electric cars to take to the streets.
Governor M. Jodi Rell issued Executive Order No. 34 on Nov. 12, which provides for the integration of electric cars into the state’s transportation system.
A new Electric Vehicles Infrastructure Council was established by the order. The council was commissioned to study issues that will affect owners of electric cars, including the cost of electricity and locations of fueling stations.
Representatives from government agencies and private industry will serve on the council. Members include public utilities such as Northeast Utilities and United Illuminating. Departments are also given representation including the Department of Motor Vehicles and the Department of Public Utility Control, the governing body that regulates the rates and services of public utilities such as the energy needed to fuel electric cars.
The state has applied for $18.9 million in federal funding to support the initiative, according to a press release.
