If you’re in the market for a new car and would like a little help with the purchase, there’s a nice $3,500 cash-back rebate this month on the Pontiac G8. There’s a similar $3,500 rebate on leftover 2009 Ford Mustangs. Or, for Colorado residents, there’s a $42,083 rebate on the all-electric Tesla Roadster.
Yeah, read it again.
Didn’t change, did it?
Autoblog reports, “Colorado is offering a $42,083 rebate on the 2009 Tesla Roadster until December 31st…yep, that’s a 38-percent discount on what must be the most desirable electric car currently for sale in the United States.”

Come 2010 and Bangalore-based Reva Electric Car Company (RECC) will try various initiatives to increase sales of its electric cars in the domestic market, so far at only around 200 units a year.
One strategy involves charging customers only for the electric car, minus the battery pack which propels it. “The project is called ‘battery leasing’. By doing this, we will be able to reduce the cost of an electric car by about Rs 60,000. We are in talks with banks for the battery leasing project,” says Chetan Maini, deputy chairman & chief technology officer. Battery leasing would bring down the cost of the lead acid fuelled car to around Rs 2.40 lakh (ex-Delhi showroom), and of an advanced lithium battery car to around Rs 3 lakh.

Sanyo Electric Co. (TSE:6764) said Wednesday that it could begin assembling hybrid vehicle battery systems overseas as early as 2012 as more automakers gear up to expand production of environmentally friendly cars.
Such regions as Europe, North and Central America, and China are among the candidates for possible locations, Sanyo said during a briefing in Tokyo to outline strategies for its automobile battery business. Launching overseas assembly, which is solely domestic at this time, will help Sanyo expand its hybrid battery systems operations.

LOOKING around the floor of the Frankfurt auto show in September, it would have been easy to conclude that the future of cars lies in pod-like electric models and not sports cars.
But with his Vision EfficientDynamics car, a model of what future BMWs might become, Adrian van Hooydonk, director of BMW Group Design, presented a different sketch of the future. BMW’s offering at Frankfurt was a plug-in electric diesel hybrid that is about as green as they get, rated at the equivalent of about 75 miles per gallon, but with the sporty acceleration of a BMW M3 sports car — like a zero-to-60 time under 4 seconds and a top speed of 155 miles per hour.

TOKYO—Nissan Motor Co. and Sumitomo Corp. said they will establish a joint venture to recycle lithium-ion electric car batteries.
The recycling effort could give Nissan an early lead in the fledgling market for electric cars by making its vehicles more affordable.

Governments are pumping more money into electric car projects, hoping the new vehicles can be part of the solution to major problems from global warming to dependence on oil.
China, the U.S. and France are among the governments that have so far pledged to spend up to $15 billion in the next five years in tax incentives, levies, subsidies and consumer bonuses to help car companies develop electric cars, according to the Boston Consulting Group.
The aid is crucial to car makers’ chances of success in turning electric cars into mass-market products. At the Tokyo Motor Show, which opens to the media on Wednesday, Nissan Motor Co. plans to unveil a new electric car resembling a scooter. It is also aiming for 20,000 orders of another electric car, the Leaf, in the U.S. next year.
But car makers are being held back by the high cost of developing and running them — and the technical difficulty of keeping them charged. It’s a chicken-and-egg challenge facing many new mass-market products: Consumers will buy electric cars only when they are cheap and convenient enough to use, but that will happen only if lots of people buy the vehicles. So governments are trying to kick-start the market.

Oct. 20 (Bloomberg) — General Motors Co. and other automakers may be moving closer to the $30,000 electric car, $10,000 cheaper than it has estimated, as Obama administration subsidies cut battery costs by as much as half.
Energy storage costs are falling because of $2.4 billion in federal grants, leaving companies including GM, Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler Group LLC poised to win buyers with more-affordable plug-in and electric autos, said Mark Duvall, director of electric transportation at the Electric Power Research Institute.
Cheaper batteries are pivotal for the electric-vehicle industry, and a $30,000 price is more likely to gain widespread acceptance, said James Bell, market analyst for Irvine, California-based Kelley Blue Book, which tracks vehicle prices. Conventional new autos now average $26,000.

TOKYO — Move over hybrids — the biggest buzz at this year’s Tokyo Motor Show looks set to come from electric cars as the dream of affordable zero-emission vehicles moves closer to reality.
Japanese automakers, pioneers in hybrid cars powered by a mixture of petrol and electricity, are now looking to take fuel-efficient motoring to the next level with vehicles that run on rechargeable batteries.
Nissan will put its electric car, the Leaf, on display to the public for the first time at the Tokyo Motor Show, which kicks off on Wednesday with press previews and opens to general visitors on Saturday.
The mid-sized hatchback, which will go on sale in late 2010 in Japan, is billed by Nissan as “the world’s first affordable, zero-emission car.”
It can travel more than 160 kilometres (100 miles) on a single charge, at a top speed of 140 kilometres per hour.
The world’s largest automaker Toyota, which has said it aims to launch an electric vehicle by 2012, will display a new version of its electric concept car — the FT-EV II — at the show.
“We think the time is almost ripe for cost levels, batteries and performance to evolve one step further,” said Toyota’s Akihiro Yanaka, who oversees the project.
