Korea: South Korean electric car maker considers manufacturing facility here, jobs

In what may be the first fruits of the G-20 Summit , or maybe just serendipity, Gov. Ed Rendell and Allegheny County Exec Dan Onorato announced that CT&T Co. Ltd., a global leader in electric vehicle technologies, will open two production and distribution facilities in Pennsylvania that will create up to 400 jobs.

CT&T makes cute, boxy low – and mid-speed electric vehicles, perfect for municipal police departments, neighborhood patrols or a jaunt to the grocery. The vehicles sell for about $12,000.

The announcement was made last week at Carnegie Mellon University, which is also working to develop new technologies for electric vehicles–lithium batteries, fuel cells, charging stations and more efficient electric motors. The company chose Pittsburgh in part for its close proximity to advanced technology companies and universities, says Onorato.
