USA: Feds Fund Nickels Electric Car Charging Network

As the PostGlobe reported earlier today, it looked as though the Department of Energy was close to announcing whether or not Seattle would get federal stimulus funds for a program to create charging stations for a new generation of electric cars. Late this morning, Mayor Greg Nickels office announced that the feds had spoken and approved Seattle’s bid of $20 million.

“This news heralds the end of the filling station and the beginning of the era of the charging station,” said Nickels in a statement issued by his office. “We are going to be leaders in converting our transportation from oil to electricity.”

The statement notes that this all ties in with the openings of the South Lake Union streetcar and Sound Transit’s light rail as heralding the ascendancy of emission-free transportation in Seattle. That may be, but to date neither the streetcar or light rail has transformed life–much less pollution–in Seattle.
