Japan/China: Electric cars may send electric shock to Asia

The Asian plantation industry assumes that the EU bio-fuel market presents major opportunities, especially for bio-diesel from CPO (palm oil), despite EU environmental restrictions on imports to protect Asian forests and wetlands.

But the new EU push on the electric car may greatly undermine potential EU bio-fuel export markets for Asian producers.

Jason Dawe in the Irish Sunday Times (July, 26) writes about the Toyota Prius a hybrid petrol and electric battery car capable of 65 miles per gallon, said to be the world’s most fuel-efficient family car, with a 1.5 litre engine and high voltage battery with power generated by the petrol engine and the brakes.
