USA: Chrysler Submits $448 Million Electric-Car Proposal To Energy Dept

Chrysler LLC said Tuesday it submitted $448 million in proposals to the U.S. Department of Energy to bring more electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid-electric vehicles to the market.
If approved, the cost of the programs would be split evenly between the DOE and Chrysler and its partner group, with each providing funding of $224 million.
The application comes amid a dramatic slowdown in demand for cars. Chrysler, which is operating under bankruptcy protection, has been trying to turn around its fortunes as the struggling auto company seeks to become more viable in the longer term, but the move to offer more fuel-efficient cars comes after oil prices have fallen from last summer’s all-time record highs. USA: Obama Administration Sparks Battery Gold Rush

Companies vying for the federal money include General Motors Corp., Dow Chemical Co., Johnson Controls Inc. and A123 Systems, a closely held battery maker backed by General Electric Co. and others. States including Michigan, Kentucky and Massachusetts are also weighing in with applications, usually in alliance with their favored battery makers.
When the winners are decided, as soon as the end of July, the Energy Department may anoint Livonia, Mich., or Indianapolis or Glendale, Ky., as the future U.S. hub of car batteries. A 2008 study by researchers at Alliance Bernstein forecast the current $9 billion-a-year auto-battery market, based on lead-acid batteries, could reach more than $150 billion by 2030.

In U.S., Steps Toward Industrial Policy in Autos

Mr. Obama’s declaration on Tuesday of tougher rules on automobile emissions and mileage standards is both an environmental and an industrial policy. The new national standards require carmakers to produce fleets that are 40 percent cleaner and more fuel efficient by 2016. In the United States, industrial policy has long been viewed with suspicion by many policy makers and economists, who consider it government meddling in the private sector and a violation of free-market principles.

Toyota’s New Prius: A Hybrid Hotshot

He’s even more upbeat about the future. Toyota plans to increase battery production for hybrids this year, from 500,000 to 800,000, and to more than 1 million by the early 2010s, in line with Toyota’s aim to sell a million hybrids a year by the early part of the next decade. “Battery supply is the key here and we’re raising our ability to supply batteries,” he says. Without that kind of capacity, it’s very difficult for other carmakers to close the gap.

South Korea experiments with recharging road strips

Electric cars are a growing trend in the world of transport with a big drive behind cutting carbon emissions leading to both hybrid and pure electric cars being manufactured. Both solutions have problems, however, with hybrids still using gas although at a reduced rate, and cars relying solely on a battery having limited range. Researchers in South Korea may have come up with a solution to that problem though, using a technique found in some electric toothbruhses.

USA: Chevy Volt Prototype Test Drive: Detroit’s Great Electric Hope

I stopped the car at the beginning of the longest stretch of road I could find, waited until it was clear of geese, and then floored it. As we rolled forward, quickly but not wildly, I couldn’t help but wonder: Where’s the tire squeal? Where’s the roar of the engine? But within a matter of seconds I was at 55 mph and out of road. I did it again, psychologically prepared for the lack of internal-combustion drama. It was exhilarating but anti-climactic. I want to know what it’s like to drive this silent ride at 100 mph, its electronically limited top speed.
