Wilbur says 3,500 people have placed $500 deposits for a car, which will be offered only in California to start. Florida and Texas are next on the list, with a national rollout to follow in late 2010 or early 2011.

Just hours after General Motors put forth a proposal for a standardized plug for electric vehicles, in flies this. German energy firm RWE has stated that a cadre of respected automakers and energy firms have all come together in agreement on a three-point, 400-volt plug that will enable electric cars the world over to be recharged anywhere, regardless of which recharging station they stop at.
We’re told that the agreement includes nods of acceptance from the likes of Volkswagen, BMW, Ford, General Motors, Fiat, Toyota, Mitsubishi, Eon, Vattenfall, EDF, Npower, Endesa and Enel.

The company has proposed SAE J1772 (pictured) as what “a common electric vehicle conductive charging system architecture will look like for all major automakers in North America.” Sounds good to us; driving the upcoming Chevy Volt 200 miles only to find out the car’s charger plug doesn’t fit the jack at the hotel sure isn’t my idea of a good time. It’s enough of a pain when I accidentally leave my cell phone charger on my desk.
