Is this tire really the “Holy Grail of Eco-Transportation,” as Treehugger believes? In a conference on the future of electric transportation, the German government has detailed a major plan to put one million electric and plug-in hybrid cars on the country’s roads within the next 11 years. About 7 million vehicles, 10% of the world’s total annual vehicle sales, will be powered entirely by electricity by 2020, predicted Nissan Motor CEO Carlos Ghosn in a speech at the Los Angeles Auto Show last week. The exodus of major automakers from auto shows in the U.S. has created an opportunity for Chinese brands looking to move into the U.S. market. “All the drive train stuff here is done in Parker, Colorado, and I have several sold and I just signed a contract with a Canadian company for 58,000 vehicles for the next two years”, ST says. The Chinese market is set to get more home-grown alternative energy vehicles, with SAIC Motor joining the list of companies that plan to work on hybrid and electric cars in the country.
