ATLANTA, Oct 22, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) — Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) of California plans to deploy as many as 3.3 million GE meters equipped with SmartMeter(TM) technology to utility customers in northern and central California. These meters will help customers manage their energy consumption and costs, while helping the utility improve customer service. Overall, PG&E plans to deploy 10.3 million SmartMeter gas and electric meters by the end of 2011 to virtually all of its customers.

Paris – Renault and Nissan are planning to mass produce electric-drive cars for the French market by 2011 with the car maker signing a memorandum of understanding with the electricity producer EDF to develop supporting battery recharging infra-structure. Until January 2010, the partners will study all the necessary technical and other requirements to supply “high-performance and affordable electric vehicles” by 2011,Renault CEO Carlos Ghosn announced.

Consumers are equally excited about the prospect of reducing their emissions while drastically reducing the cost of driving, and the government’s new $7500 tax credit for their purchase will only add to the hysteria. In an interview, BYD Co. Chairman Wang Chuanfu said the car, known as the F3DM, will be on sale in China by the end of November, pending government approval. Mr. Wang declined to provide a sales target or price range for the new electric car but said in Beijing earlier this year that the vehicle could carry a price tag of about 150,000 yuan ($22,000) and is capable of going as far as 110 kilometers on electricity when fully charged.
