Last week the first battery stations were introduced in downtown Tokyo as the city gets ready for the introduction of new electric vehicles. Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) has installed charging devices for electric cars in nine basement parking lots, including those under several office buildings, in the central financial district. It is the first time that “battery stations” for electric vehicles have been set up in basement parking areas.

A piece of good news has finally come out of Detroit’s constantly ailing auto industry. General Motors Thursday announced that the company will invest $370 million in building a new manufacturing plant for its global 4-cylinder engines in Flint, Mich. Fittingly, Flint is a city made famous in a Michael Moore documentary that detailed how the city was wronged by GM with huge layoffs for thousands of residents.

April 5, 2008. California has told car makers to start producing hybrid vehicles that can be plugged into the electricity mains.
Last week the state’s Air Resources Board ruled that makers must produce at least 58,000 “plug-in” hybrid vehicles for sale in California between 2012 and 2014. Regular hybrid cars like the Toyota Prius use an engine to charge their batteries. Plug-in hybrids go one better as their batteries can be topped up from the mains, cutting fuel consumption further.

BYD’s electric cars are expected in Israel and Europe by 2010.
BYD has said the cars could travel 300 km on a single charge. A full charge needs nine hours using its lithium-ion batteries, although they could be charged to 80 percent capacity in 15 minutes, according to BYD.
